Description
Struck between circa 1266–1287 CE during the reign of Ghiyas ud-Din Balban, this billon Jital belongs to the early Delhi Sultanate coinage tradition. Minted in hammered fabric and weighing approximately 3.6 grams, the coin reflects the transitional monetary system of northern India during the consolidation of Sultanate authority.
The obverse carries bilingual inscriptions in Nagari and Persian script, including the ruler’s name “Balban” in Arabic within a double circle, alongside Nagari legends referring to Sri Sultan Ghiyasadin, illustrating the coexistence of Indo-Islamic and regional Indian traditions.
The reverse features Persian inscriptions with royal Islamic titulature arranged in a bold linear style typical of early Sultanate hammered coinage.
Coins of Balban are highly regarded for their historical significance, bilingual fabric, and strong representation of cultural interaction in medieval India. An excellent addition for collectors of Delhi Sultanate, Indo-Islamic, and medieval hammered coinage.
