The reverse shows Britannia seated facing right, wearing a helmet, holding a trident, hand resting on a shield . With the words ‘ONE PENNY‘ in the fields, and date below.  A lighthouse is in the background to the left of Britannia.

One penny coins issued in 1938 remained in circulation for 33 years until “Decimal Day”, 15 February 1971. When the old currency was demonetised and the decimal Pound Sterling was introduced, with a new decimal penny replacing these old coins. The obverse of the coin shows the bare head of King George VI facing left
