Description
This copper ¼ Anna coin was issued by the Princely State of Gwalior during the reign of Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia between Vikram Samvat 1953–1958 (1896–1901). Struck in copper and measuring approximately 22 mm in diameter with a weight of about 7.4 grams, it represents an important small denomination used in everyday circulation within the Gwalior state.
The obverse displays the royal emblem of Gwalior, featuring a stylized cobra positioned above crossed spear and trident symbols. Surrounding the emblem is a circular beaded border with Devanagari inscriptions referring to Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia.
The reverse carries Devanagari inscriptions indicating “Gwalior Pav Aana Samvat,” identifying the denomination of quarter anna and the Vikram Samvat year. The text is framed by an ornamental wreath and bordered by a beaded circle.
Coins of the Gwalior princely state are appreciated for their bold royal symbolism and regional scripts. This piece offers collectors a strong historical connection to the Scindia dynasty and the diverse coinage traditions of pre-independence India.
