Description
Struck between circa 1663–1724 under Dutch Cochin, this silver Fanam reflects the regional coinage system used along the Malabar Coast during the Dutch colonial presence in India. Compact in size and lightweight at approximately 0.32 grams, these coins were produced for everyday circulation and regional trade.
The obverse depicts a formalized standing figure identified as Goddess Kali, rendered in a highly stylized manner typical of South Indian miniature coinage traditions.
The reverse carries the familiar degenerate boar motif with dotted elements below, an abstract continuation of earlier South Indian symbolic designs adapted into later regional issues.
Dutch Cochin Fanams are valued for their historical association with maritime trade, colonial-era commerce, and traditional Kerala coinage styles. An excellent addition for collectors of Dutch India, South Indian states, and fanam series coinage.
