Description
Struck between 1193 and 1206 AD under the Ghurid Dynasty, this billon Jital is attributed to the Badaun type and issued in the name of Muhammad of Ghor. Weighing around 3.4 grams and produced using hammered technique, it reflects localized adaptations in early Indo-Islamic coinage.
The obverse shows a stylized bull facing left, with Devanagari legend “Sri Mahamada Sama” above and symbolic elements around, indicating continuity of regional engraving styles.
The reverse depicts a stylized horseman, maintaining the iconic motif derived from earlier North Indian coin traditions.
This type is valued for its blend of Islamic authority and indigenous design elements, particularly the use of Devanagari script. It is a notable piece for collectors focused on Ghurid issues, regional mint varieties, and transitional coinage of medieval India.
