Description
Struck between 1609 and 1623 AD during the rule of Muthu Virappa Nayaka, this 1 Kasu coin belongs to the Madurai Nayak Kingdom. Made of copper and weighing around 1.62 grams, it features a hammered technique with an irregular round shape, typical of regional South Indian coinage of the period.
The obverse depicts Shiva and Parvathi seated facing, a motif reflecting the strong Shaivite traditions of the region. The design is stylized and compact, consistent with the limitations of hammered minting methods.
On the reverse, the inscription “Sri Vira” appears in Telugu script, referring to the ruler and serving as an identifying mark of authority. The simple yet bold lettering complements the symbolic obverse imagery.
This coin is of particular interest to collectors of South Indian dynasties and hammered coinage. Its religious depiction, regional identity, and early 17th-century origin make it a meaningful addition to a historically focused numismatic collection.
