Description

Struck between 1843 and 1886 at the Gwalior Fort Mint, this 1 Paisa coin circulated under the rule of Jayaji Rao Scindia of the Gwalior Princely State. Made of copper and weighing approximately 9.23 grams, the coin features a hammered appearance with an irregular round shape, characteristic of local Indian state coinage of the 19th century.

The obverse carries stylized Persian-influenced calligraphic elements and symbolic motifs rendered in a compact format. The hand-struck nature of the issue gives each specimen slight variations in strike and alignment.

The reverse continues the traditional regional design language with bold script elements and abstract arrangements, reflecting the localized minting practices of princely India during the late pre-modern period.

Coins of the Gwalior State are sought after by collectors of Indian princely states and hammered coinage. Their historical connection to the Scindia dynasty and distinctive regional style make them an important part of Indian numismatic history.
