Description
The 1 Rupee banknote issued in 1944 by the Government of India is an important piece of currency from the final years of British rule in India. Unlike higher denominations, this note was directly issued by the Government rather than the central bank.
Printed on paper and measuring approximately 110 × 70 mm, the note features a distinctive design characteristic of British India currency. The obverse includes a portrait of George VI in the upper corner, symbolizing British authority at the time. The text “Government of India” and the denomination “One Rupee” are prominently displayed in English, along with additional inscriptions in regional languages.
The reverse side contains ornamental patterns and multilingual scripts reflecting the diversity of India. The design is relatively simple compared to higher denomination notes but retains official styling and security features of the period.
This banknote was demonetized in 1957 after India transitioned to a new currency system post-independence. Today, it is a highly collectible item, valued for its historical significance, connection to the colonial era, and its place in the transition to modern Indian currency issued by the Reserve Bank of India.
