Description
The 1 Rupee banknote issued between 1966 and 1980 by the Government of India is a notable example of post-independence Indian currency under the decimalized system.
Printed on paper and measuring approximately 97 × 63 mm, this note carries a violet color scheme with a compact and refined design. The obverse side features a smaller watermark window on the left and a large ornamental numeral “1” at the center. It prominently includes the national emblem, the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar Capital, symbolizing India’s sovereignty and heritage.
A unique feature of this note is the inscription of “One Rupee” in 13 different Indian languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This multilingual presentation highlights the unity in diversity of India.
Unlike most higher denomination notes, the 1 Rupee note is issued directly by the Government rather than the central bank, and it bears the signature of the Finance Secretary. The reverse side continues the theme of linguistic diversity and decorative patterns.
This banknote is now demonetized but remains popular among collectors for its cultural significance, multilingual design, and its representation of India’s evolving monetary system alongside issues of the Reserve Bank of India.
