Description
The 100 Ariary banknote was issued in 2017 by the Central Bank of Madagascar (Banky Foiben’i Madagasikara) as part of the “Madagascar and its Riches – Series 2.” This modern currency series was designed to showcase the country’s unique biodiversity, landscapes, and cultural heritage while serving as a standard circulating banknote in the nation’s economy.
The obverse features the Ambositra Cathedral and a scenic view of Fianarantsoa, symbolizing Madagascar’s architectural and cultural identity. The design also includes a butterfly on the left, birds in flight, and the outline of the island of Madagascar, emphasizing the country’s natural beauty. The note carries inscriptions from the central bank along with the denomination “100 Ariary.”
The reverse highlights Madagascar’s remarkable wildlife with a Madagascar poison frog (Mantella baroni) at the center and a waterfall scene in the background. On the right appears the Madagascan moon moth (Argema mittrei), one of the island’s most famous insects. With its vivid colors and strong environmental theme, this banknote is a fascinating addition for collectors interested in modern world currency and Madagascar’s unique biodiversity.
