Description
The 100 Australes banknote was issued on 25 November 1985 by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, during the introduction of the Austral currency, which replaced the Argentine peso in an attempt to address severe inflation. The Austral remained Argentina’s currency until 1991, making this note part of an important but relatively brief chapter in the country’s monetary history.
The obverse features a portrait of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Argentine statesman, educator, writer and former president. The note carries the inscriptions “Banco Central de la República Argentina,” “Cien Australes,” and Sarmiento’s name, with an attractive red and pink-toned design.
The reverse depicts Liberty (Progreso) seated with a torch and shield, symbolizing progress and national ideals. The denomination and “República Argentina” are also prominently displayed. Its historical connection to Argentina’s Austral currency period makes this a desirable addition for collectors of Latin American and world banknotes.
