Description
The 2 Paʻanga banknote was issued in 2015 by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga as part of a modern currency series celebrating the Kingdom’s heritage and leadership. Tonga is one of the only Pacific island nations that maintained its monarchy through the colonial era, and the note highlights the reign of King Tupou VI, who ascended the throne in 2012.
The obverse features a portrait of King Tupou VI on the right, representing the constitutional monarchy of Tonga. The national coat of arms appears on the note along with official inscriptions identifying the Kingdom of Tonga and the National Reserve Bank of Tonga. The design uses warm red tones and modern security features.
The reverse depicts a whale leaping from the ocean, symbolizing the rich marine life and cultural relationship between the Tongan people and the Pacific Ocean. Decorative motifs and official text complete the design. With its striking artwork and representation of Polynesian culture, this banknote is a desirable piece for collectors of world currency and island nations.
