Description
This copper 2 Pai coin was issued by the Princely State of Hyderabad during the reign of Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali Khan between AH 1322–1329 (1904–1911). Struck in copper with a diameter of approximately 20.6 mm and a weight of about 3.9 grams, the coin circulated widely within the Hyderabad State, which was one of the largest and most influential princely states in India.
The obverse features a stylized tughra-style calligraphic design referencing the Asaf Jahi dynasty, with the number 92 incorporated into the inscription, symbolically representing the name “Muhammad” in Arabic numerology. The AH date appears below the central design.
The reverse displays the denomination “Du Pai” (Two Pai) in Urdu within a central circle, surrounded by additional inscriptions referring to the minting authority at Hyderabad and the regnal context of the Nizam’s rule.
Coins of Hyderabad are well known for their refined Islamic calligraphy and historical significance within princely India. This example represents the distinctive monetary tradition of the Asaf Jahi dynasty and remains an appealing collectible for enthusiasts of Indian princely state coinage.
