Description

Struck between 1834 and 1843 under Krishna Raja Wodeyar III of Mysore, this copper 5 Cash represents an important circulation issue of the princely state period. Minted on an irregular round flan and weighing approximately 2.14 grams, the coin reflects the practical and distinctive hand-struck style of South Indian regional coinage.

The obverse features the Kannada legend “Sri” flanked by the traditional sun and moon symbols, along with a stylized lion facing left and the date below. This design combines royal symbolism with dynastic identity, emphasizing continuity and sovereignty under Mysore rule.

The reverse carries Urdu inscriptions referring to Krishna and Mahisur (Mysore), with the denomination “5” placed to the left. The bilingual format reflects the administrative and cultural diversity of Mysore coinage during the 19th century.

This type remains highly collectible among collectors of Mysore and princely state coinage for its distinctive lion motif, multilingual inscriptions, and historical connection to one of South India’s most respected royal dynasties.
