Description
The 50 Shillings banknote was issued between 1994 and 1996 by the Bank of Somaliland, following Somaliland’s declaration of independence in 1991. This currency series marked an important step in establishing the region’s independent monetary system and national identity.
The obverse features the historic Goodirka Building in Hargeisa, formerly the House of Representatives at the time of Somaliland’s independence declaration and now serving as the Supreme Court headquarters. Traditional decorative motifs and a kudu antelope complement the design, alongside inscriptions in Arabic and Latin scripts.
The reverse depicts a group of camels, symbolizing the traditional pastoral heritage and livestock culture of Somaliland. The denomination and bilingual inscriptions complete the design. With its distinctive small-format appearance and historical connection to Somaliland’s early currency, this banknote is an appealing addition for collectors of African and unusual world banknotes.
