Description

Struck between approximately the 16th and 18th centuries, these brass Fanams circulated across the Kerala region under various local rulers and trading authorities. Typically very small in size and weight, they were produced using hammered techniques, resulting in irregular shapes and variations in strike.

The obverse commonly features a pattern of raised dots arranged in clusters, along with curved or crescent-like lines. These abstract motifs are characteristic of Kerala Fanam coinage and served as recognizable symbols in local commerce.

The reverse generally carries similar dotted arrangements or simplified geometric impressions, often less defined due to the manual striking process. Variations between pieces are normal, adding to their individuality.

Fanams are widely collected for their historical role in regional trade and their unique visual identity. Their small size, traditional minting style, and variety of forms make them especially appealing to collectors of South Indian and pre-modern Indian coinage.
