Description
This bronze tetradrachm was issued by the Kota Kula principality associated with the Kidarite Kingdom between approximately 360 and 460 AD. The Kidarites emerged after the decline of the Kushan Empire and controlled parts of northwestern India and Central Asia. The coin was struck using the hammered technique and typically weighs around 5 grams with an irregular round flan.
The obverse displays a stylized figure of the Hindu deity Shiva accompanied by a bull, representing Nandi. The design is rendered in a simple and symbolic style typical of regional coinage from this period.
The reverse shows the Kota dynastic symbol along with a wheel with four spokes and a trident motif. These elements likely represent authority and religious symbolism associated with Shaivite traditions.
Coins of the Kidarite period are valued for their historical significance and distinctive artistic style. This example is particularly appealing to collectors interested in ancient Indian, Central Asian, and early post-Kushan coinage.
