Description
Struck between 1343 and 1356 under Emperor Harihara I, founder of the Vijayanagara Empire, this copper 1 Kasu represents one of the earliest circulating issues of the dynasty. Hammered on an irregular round flan and weighing approximately 3.27 grams, the coin reflects the robust and symbolic style of early Vijayanagara regional coinage.
The obverse features a humped bull standing to the right, positioned before a stylised Shankh (conch shell), with the Kannada letter “Ha” above. The bull and conch together represent strong religious symbolism, often associated with Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions, while the Kannada initial links the coin directly to Harihara’s authority.
The reverse displays a stylised standing human figure derived from older Chola design traditions, preserving continuity with South Indian numismatic heritage while establishing Vijayanagara’s own royal identity.
This type is especially desirable among collectors of Vijayanagara and South Indian dynastic coinage for its early imperial association, distinctive iconography, and historical connection to one of medieval India’s most powerful empires.
