Description

Struck during the short but important reign of Queen Sugandha Rani (904–906 AD) of Kashmir, these bronze Æ Staters represent one of the notable female-ruled issues in early medieval Indian numismatics. The coins typically weigh around 5.78 grams and are struck on irregular round flans, reflecting the characteristic style of post-Hunnic Kashmir coinage.

The obverse depicts Goddess Lakshmi seated facing forward, accompanied by the Nagari legend “Sug( ndha )” to the right. This sacred iconography symbolizes prosperity and royal legitimacy, while directly linking the issue to Queen Sugandha’s rule.

The reverse shows the king standing and performing sacrifice at an altar, with the Nagari legend “Devya” at the right. This traditional royal-sacrificial motif reflects sovereignty, ritual authority, and continuity of Kashmir’s established coinage traditions.

As a multiple-coin set, this offering is especially attractive for collectors of early Indian dynasties, female ruler coinage, and Kashmir issues. The combination of historical rarity, distinctive iconography, and dynastic importance makes it a remarkable addition to a serious collection.
