Description
Struck during the Maratha Confederacy period under the Arani Maratha issue, this copper Kasu dates approximately from 1740 to 1780 AD. These small denomination coins circulated widely in South India and are known for their strong regional identity, religious symbolism, and compact hand-struck fabric. The coin weighs around 3.1 grams and represents a classic copper fractional issue of the period.
The obverse depicts Hanuman in the iconic Veera posture facing right, a powerful representation associated with courage, protection, and devotion. The bold figure occupies most of the flan, giving the coin strong visual character despite its compact size.
The reverse features a criss-cross geometric pattern with the Kannada letter “Ra” placed within the design, serving as a distinctive regional identifying element for this Arani Maratha series.
Collectors of South Indian and Maratha coinage highly value this type for its devotional theme, hand-struck appearance, and connection to regional power structures of the 18th century, making it an excellent addition to an early Indian coin collection.
