Description
Issued during the reign of Emperor Showa (1959–1989), this 10 Yen coin was struck in bronze (95% copper, 4–3% zinc, 1–2% tin), weighing 4.5 grams with a diameter of 23.5 mm. This variety features the smooth edge, distinguishing it from later reeded-edge issues.
The obverse depicts the celebrated Phoenix Hall of Byōdō-in Temple (Hōō-dō) in Uji, one of Japan’s most iconic architectural landmarks, with the country name above and denomination below.
The reverse features the large “10” denomination with the Showa era date beneath, enclosed within a graceful laurel wreath, creating a clean and balanced design representative of modern Japanese coinage.
An excellent addition for collectors of Japanese, Asian, and world coins, the Showa 10 Yen Smooth Edge variety is appreciated for its cultural heritage, distinctive design, and place in Japan’s post-war monetary history.
