Description
Azes II was a prominent ruler associated with the Indo-Scythian kingdoms of the northwestern Indian subcontinent. Coins attributed to his reign reflect the cultural interactions and artistic traditions that developed across the region during the late first century BC. This bronze chalkon represents an interesting example of the coinage circulated during this historically significant period.
Obverse: The obverse depicts the king seated cross-legged, facing forward with his head turned to the left. He holds a partly unsheathed sword in his left hand and a whip or ankus in his right. The surrounding Greek legend reads Basileos Basileon Megalou Azou, meaning “of the Great King of Kings, Azes.”
Reverse: The reverse features winged Hermes standing and facing forward, holding a caduceus. Control marks appear on either side, while the Kharosthi legend includes the title Maharaja Rajarajasa Mahatasa, conveying the idea of a great king of kings. The combination of Greek and Kharosthi inscriptions reflects the multilingual traditions of Indo-Scythian coinage.
Collectibility: With its bronze composition, distinctive seated-ruler design, and winged Hermes imagery, this chalkon is an appealing addition to collections focused on Indo-Scythian rulers and ancient northwestern Indian coinage. Its bilingual inscriptional tradition also offers an interesting connection to the cultural exchange between the Hellenistic and South Asian worlds.
