Description

Struck between 1601 and 1609 under the rule of Muttu Krishnappa in the Kingdom of Madurai, this copper 1 Kasu represents a prominent circulation issue of the Nayaka period. Hammered on an irregular round flan and weighing approximately 3.43 grams, the coin reflects the compact and character-rich style of South Indian regional coinage.

The obverse features Venkateshwara (Vishnu) standing facing forward, placed between an altar and a flag bearing a fish symbol. This sacred imagery reflects both religious devotion and the political symbolism associated with the Madurai rulers and their temple-centered authority.

The reverse displays a two-line Telugu inscription divided by a horizontal line and enclosed within a beaded border. The inscription reads “Venkatapa,” connecting the issue to the ruling authority and strengthening its dynastic attribution.

This type remains highly desirable among collectors of South Indian dynastic coinage for its devotional design, hammered fabric, and strong association with the Madurai Nayaka administration, making it a significant addition to an early Indian coin collection.
